Packing & Packaging
The key to successful storage is planning, packing and stacking!
Before you start packing items for storage make sure you have enough sturdy boxes or crates, bubble wrap for delicate items like china and glassware, parcel tape and a thick marker pen to clearly label every box.
Tip. Ensure every box is completely full! That way you make the most of your storage space and a half empty box can collapse. NB, heavy items like books and vinyl records should be packed in small boxes.
Tip. Books should be stored flat in boxes. Records should be stored upright in boxes, mirrors and framed pictures should be wrapped in bubble wrap and stored vertically.
Tip. Mark each box with it’s contents and, if you’re storing the entire contents of your house, label each box by room!
Curtains/ Clothing
Should not be left in drawers and wardrobes but folded and packed in boxes with mothballs.
Furniture
Sheets of cardboard or old blankets can be used to protect table tops in storage.
Electrical equipment
If you don’t have the original boxes for your TV, hi-fi, computers and other electrical items, wrap them in bubble wrap and place in a box. On a record player ensure the turntable is locked or taped down and the tone arm secured. Please remove any batteries.
White goods
Fridges and freezers should be cleaned and dried before being placed in storage.
Wedging the fridge/ freezer door open will allow air to circulate and help keep your appliance fresh and free from mildew and odours.
Cycles and garden machinery etc
Please make sure that all fuel and oil is drained from your machinery and that fuel caps are left off. Bike chains should be covered to prevent marking or damage to your other items.
